Cape Blend

Cape Blend

Establising a strong identity for the "Cape Blend" wine style, took a giant leap through the inaugural Perold Absa Cape Blend Competition, probably a historic moment in the envolvement of the local industry, with the awards function appropriately taking place in the shadow of the landmark KWV facade on Paarl's main street.
The significance of the venue is that the indigenous Pinotage variety 'naturally' formed the basis of the blends in contention and that Pinotage had been created by Dr Abraham Perold, who at one time was in KWV's employment.
Probably ever since the early 1930's the debate has been raging about the composition of a truly 'representative' world-winning Cape Blend. The consensus seems to have been all along that a red blend with a distinctive South African personality, plenty of character, balance, appeal over a wide spectrum and good ageing potential, would go a long way to complete the 'Brand South Africa' offering.
The rules of the competition stated that 30% of the blend, but not more that 70% had to be Pinotage.
